"There's no such thing as 'free software'"![]() An "anonymous" teacher named Karen from an unnamed middle school in the Austin School district just doesn't seem to get it. She wrote an angry email to an organization that GIVES free laptops loaded with Linux to bright school children. She accused the organization of doing the students a disservice by steering them away from Microsoft and promised to investigate whether they were up to something that was illegal. Excerpt: No software is free and spreading that misconception is harmful. These children look up to adults for guidance and discipline. I will research this as time allows and I want to assure you, if you are doing anything illegal, I will pursue charges as the law allows. This email is so unbelievably ignorant to come from a teacher that I almost question its authenticity. I am guessing that she never googled "free software." Perhaps she's never heard of google and only does her searches from msn.com... For some reason, they decided to censor the last name of the teacher and the school at which she teaches. Being the douche that I am, here are the names of ALL Karens who are teachers at Middle Schools in the Austin Independant School District: Karen Bailey - Martin Middle School Karen Brennan - Martin Middle School Karen Case - Murchison Middle School Karen Ciesla - O'Henry Middle School Karen Donsbach - Bailey Middle School Karen Greathouse - Clint Small Middle School Karen Green - Murchison Middle School Karen Harris - Covington Middle School Karen Jackson - Bailey Middle School Karen Noyes - Murchison Middle School Karen Schipper - Kealing Middle School Karen Terry - Mendez Middle School |

I created the site http://freesoftwareforkaren... after reading the HeliOS blog post. Check it out, the blog should be running within 12 hours if everything goes as planned.
BTW the "Add Comments" section of this page is somewhat broken at least in google chrome.
